Hmmm... maybe this album should have been split into two separate EPs... Alas, the half-hour "Lament Of The Forgotten King" is of a kind that just doesn't catch me, and the king will soon be forgotten again. Maybe the new Epiphone Les Paul is to blame?! On the other hand, the remaining unrelated tracks following this suite are among the best I've heard so far of Tony Castellano. Especially "Eleventh Hour" is a terrific polyphonic masterpiece, taking vocal counterpoints à la "Gentle Giant" to the max. A full-length album of exactly this kind of stuff would be a blessing!

Symphonic rock from Estonia? Cool... the first such item in my collection! All except the last three tracks are designed as a sci-fi/fantasy suite, completely produced on the advanced Ensoniq SD-1 wavetable synthesizer/sequencer, demonstrating impressively the fat sound and rich capabilities of this vintage keyboard, suited ideally for one-man bands like Slava Petsnikov "Gulliver". The "Metarmophosis" sonata adds solo violin - a real one - to the SD-1, performed with virtuosity by Andrew Valigura.

So I decided to buy the entire discography of Tony Castellano, since it's obvious from the start that I'm going to purchase all of his releases sooner or later. Now it takes some time to listen until I can comment on them, and I'll start with "Walking Like Rudy", because it's my favorite so far after a quick 'n' short ride through all albums. Being an old die-hard art/prog rock fan, I'm sometimes annoyed by contemporary prog creations, because there's much lack of inspiration and no real "progress" in there with respect to the 70's. This album is quite different. While clearly being based on vintage art rock heritage, especially early Steve Hackett, the music sounds fresh, new, and notably unusual and surprising. In a nutshell - a fully gratifying 65-minute listening pleasure.

"Salmon" is yet another band from the Netherlands, which emphasizes clearly why I keep on reiterating that Dutch prog is one of the best in the world. Continuing a long tradition of highly melodic, yet pleasantly complex symphonic rock that originated in the 70's with bands like "Focus", "Kayak", "Finch", "Solution", and "Lady Lake", just to name a few, this band enchants us with flawless songwriting and a pinch of "Gentle Giant" flavor. As usual in prog, the shorter tracks are much better than the 20-minute epic, which suffers a bit from being stuffed with too many stereotypical phrases that were already boring back in the golden era where they came from. The exquisite quality of the remaining tracks, however, outweighs this little drawback considerably.
